I think engineering can be a really interesting profession as there are so many different industries you can work in. I have worked in the space industry and now work in the health sector; you can use engineering qualifications for car and engine design; railways; product design; aeroplanes; military; gas; water; electricity; agriculture; robotics; and so many more I can’t possibly list them all.
My advice if you were interested is to study a general “Mechanical Engineering” degree. It is possible to study specific engineering areas such as “Aerospace” or “Biomedical” which is useful if you want to know more about one subject, but I’ve found that a general “Engineering” degree means you can work in any or all of those areas that sound interesting.

Yes, it is a good line of work to go in as compared to some other sectors there are more jobs around, and it does pay quite well.

However, it all depends on what you want to do!! Engineering degrees are pretty hard, you need to be interested in what you’re studying. If you are interested, then go for whichever discipline interests you most! Use the careers people at your school to tell you all about what there is.

To find out about chemical engineering, this website is really good: http://www.whynotchemeng.com

Hello jacko420. Very pleased to meet you. 🙂

Engineering is a good line of work to go into because the skills learned can be transferred to most other jobs, if you ever changed your mind later on.

The type of Engineering I would recommend for you, would most likely be something you enjoy doing already. Think about what you like the doing the most and that’s a good starting point.

Let me know what you like to do in your spare time and I can make a better suggestion. What are your hobbies, what would you really love to do and do you have any dreams?

      Hi jacko420,

      Sorry for the late reply.

I would say engineering is really good line of work to go into!
It is exciting, challenging, fun and you learn a lot.
Also, their are plenty of jobs available in engineering and you can earn decent wages.

But which kind of engineer you want to be is completely upto you.
See what interests you the most? If you like cars, aeroplanes then may be you want to consider mechanical engineering. If you are interested in biology/medicine as well as engineering, then biomedical engineering may be right choice for you. If you are interested in chemical formulae etc. then chemical engineering might be an option, if you like computers, programming etc. then computer engineering can be your choice.

If you are still not sure then as Matin said go for general engineering and later you can decide what type of industry you want to work in.

Hi jacko420! Engineering is a GREAT line of work! Especially if you want to work hard, think hard, and be creative.

There are so many different disciplines in engineering, it’s really about where your interests like. Do you like cars? Try mechanical engineering. Building bridges with legos? Try civil engineering!! Do you like the idea of designing mechanical hearts or finding a cure for cancer than might involve nanotechnology? Well the Biological or Biomedical engineering might be for you! 🙂

Try a little searching on the internet for other types of engineering you find interesting? I think environmental engineering is going to be much needed in the future…
