I didn’t know I wanted to work in engineering until my final year of A levels. Before then I had no idea what career I wanted to follow.
Until the end of school I didn’t know what would be the best thing for me to do, maths and physics were my better subjects so I thought engineering would be good. I’m really glad I chose this career and would really recommend it to you if you are thinking about it.
In early school years I was not sure what I wanted to be. I was interested in science as well as history, arts etc.
Before going to uni, that is in my A levels, I decided that engineering is what I wanted to do. But even at that point I was not 100% sure which area I will work in and what my career will look like in few years after graduating from the uni. Towards the final year of my undergrad I was more or less sure about my specific interests and what area I would like to make my career in.
No, I don’t think it’s one of thoses careers that kids tend to know about. How many 5 year olds do you know who say “I want to be an engineer”? They are very clever if they do…
I think I knew when I was about 16.
